Year 5 students built and programmed a mechanical alligator using the Lego Education WeDo construction set.
The LEGO® Education WeDo 1.0 is an easy-to-use concept that introduces young students to robotics. Students will be able to build LEGO models featuring working motors and sensors; program their models; and explore a series of cross-curricular, theme-based activities while developing their skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as well as language, literacy, and social studies.
Groups of students followed visual instructions to make the alligator. While building the model, they were able to identify pulleys and belts, crown gears and axles as well as powered motors and motion sensors. Then, students used the Lego WeDo software to program their alligators to detect motion, open and close their jaws and make a crushing sound in coordination with jaw movement.
